No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
