The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
