Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
